Association between Arthritis and Eye Diseases in the KNHANES 2016~2018

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose : This study aimed to explore the association between arthritis/osteoarthritis and eye diseases based on the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016~2018)
Methods : A cross-sectional analyses were performed on 3,243 adults aged ≥50 years with records of diagnoses of arthritis/osteoarthritis and eye diseases from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016~2018) data. p<0.050 was considered significant.
Results : There was significant association of arthritis/osteoarthritis with cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration. When all variables were adjusted, arthritis appeared to increase the risk of cataract by 1.296 times (95% CI: 1.054~1.594), and macular degeneration increased the risk by 2.413 times (95% CI: 1.172~4.968). Osteoarthritis was also found to increase the risk of macular degeneration by 2.758 times (95% CI: 1.342~5.668). Glaucoma was not affected either by arthritis or osteoarthritis.
Conclusion : Arthritis and osteoarthritis were found to increase the risk of macular degeneration, and cataracts were also affected by arthritis.
